FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT
FOR STUDENTS ENROLLED BEFORE FALL 2018
Students who entered Morehouse College prior to Fall 2018 can satisfy the foreign language requirement by taking two courses at the 201 -202 intermediate level (6 credit hours). Courses taken at the 101-102 elementary level may be taken for elective credit only.
FOR INCOMING STUDENTS STARTING FALL 2018
Students who will enter Morehouse College in Fall 2018 can satisfy the foreign language requirement by taking the sequence 101, 102 and 201 (9 credit hours). All students must take the placement exam to ensure proper placement.
At the beginning of the semester, the instructor will verify all student levels of competency and/or the instructor might ask the student to take the placement test again. Upon evaluation, the student will be reassigned accordingly.
The Department of Modern Foreign Languages reserves the right to require students to retake the placement examination to ensure proper placement and reassign the student. The initial course that new incoming students are assigned will determine how many courses are needed to fulfill their language requirement. Students cannot skip the sequence.
Before arrival on campus, all incoming students (including beginners, transfer students and native speakers) who want to take French, German or Spanish to complete the Morehouse general education requirement in language must complete the WebCAPE online placement exam. Students should take the exam as soon as possible to expedite the completion of their schedule. (For students interested in Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and Latin, see instructions below.)
The exam should be taken in a quiet place with no external aids (i.e., electronic devices, books, notes, other students, etc.). Students are expected to adhere to basic standards of honesty and academic integrity when taking the exam. At the beginning of the semester, your instructor will verify your level of competency and you might be asked to take the exam again and the student will be reassigned accordingly.
The Department of Modern Foreign Languages reserves the right to require students to retake the placement examination to ensure proper placement.
You CANNOT use this exam to place out of the Morehouse language requirement. Only verified AP, International Baccalaureate, OPI and CLEP scores, or transferable credit, will be reviewed for credit. Even if credit is granted, the Department of Modern Foreign Languages strongly encourages students to continue taking upper-level language courses to maintain and improve their fluency.
A word of advice: Considering the essential role of a second language for graduate schools and careers, the Department of Modern Foreign Languages strongly encourages students who already speak a second language well to continue taking upper-level language courses to maintain and improve their fluency.
