|Summer Program in Cádiz - Poster|
Study Spanish in Cádiz, Spain. The Morehouse College Summer Program offers immersion Spanish in one of Spain’s most historic cities. Cádiz, Spain is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the western world. It was founded by the Phoenicians in 1,000 B.C.
Students take four weeks of Spanish language and culture classes at the Universidad de Cádiz with Spanish instructors and take field trips to places of interest, including a full day excursion to Seville and an overnight excursion to Córdoba with its famous mosque.
While in Cádiz, students live with Spanish families and have all three meals there. The group also has an introductory tour of the city of Cádiz, with its Torre Tavira, Plaza de San Juan de Dios, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza de España- Monumento a las Cortes and its Alameda Apodaca and Parque Genovés. In addition, excursions include those to Jerez de la Frontera, Vejer de la Frontera, Tarifa (from where you can see Africa) and Baelo Claudia (the famous Roman settlement.)
Classes are at the University from Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 2:00pm. Upon successful completion of all class-work, participation on tours and cultural activities, students receive equivalent academic credit for two courses in Spanish.
Students may take a grammar class, equivalent to Spanish 202 or, for more advanced students, Advanced Spanish Grammar. A Conversation class is available (equivalent to Spanish 303) as is Spanish Civilization: The African Presence in Spain (Spanish 331). Other possible classes for advanced students include Spanish Composition and Literature.
Students live with local families in home stays and all meals are eaten with the family. Since participants are considered family members, they are expected to abide by house rules. Public transportation (or shared taxis) may be needed to reach the university from some homes; for this, budget an additional amount daily.
Program cost is estimated at $4588, although this may vary slightly according to exchange rates, Spanish government cost of living increases, and travel arrangements.
Note: Airfare not included.
A minimum of Spanish 201 is required. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 in Spanish classes. Apply early to be assured of a place, since program size is limited.
