Elise Durham, media relations manager, served as program chair for the 2009 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention Aug 5-9 in Tampa, Fla. Durham approved and managed the workshops and training opportunities for approximately 2,000 convention attendees.

Kellye Blackburn Eccles, director of Career Planning and Placement for Non-Business Majors, received the 2009 Campus Liaison of the Year Award from the Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP) at its 40th Anniversary National Conference in June 2009.

 

Gregory Hall, political science chairman and associate professor, co-authored the article "Russia, China, and the Energy-Security Politics of the Caspian Sea Region after the Cold War,” which appeared in Mediterranean Quarterly during spring 2009.

C.O. Hollis Jr., chief audit officer, gave a presentation at the Institute of Internal Auditors’ International Conference, May 10-13 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Hollis represented the Institute’s Atlanta chapter and helped promote next year’s international conference to be held in Atlanta in June 2010.

Melvin Jones, director of bands, is featured in the brochure, Profiles in Pride, March of the Mighty, which celebrates the heritage of marching bands at historically black colleges and universities.

Terry Mills, dean of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, has been chosen the 2009 Outstanding Mentor Award winner by the Gerontological Society of America, Task Force on Minority Issues in Gerontology. Mills will receive the award on Nov. 19.

Nathan Nobis, assistant professor of psychology, was named adjunct assistant professor at The Humane Society University, based in Washington, D.C., and as an adjunct assistant professor in the department of Community Health and Preventative Medicine at the Morehouse School of Medicine. He also will serve as a bioethicist for a cancer health disparities project with MSM, Tuskegee Institute and the University of Alabama at Birmingham

Ron Thomas, director of the Journalism and Sports Program, co-hosted the Sam Lacy Pioneer Awards at the national convention of the National Association of Black Journalists on Aug. 7 in Tampa, Fla. The awards, sponsored by the NABJ Sports Task Force, gave Pioneer Awards to former NFL stars Doug Williams (Morehouse football coach in 1997), Lee Roy Selmon and Ken Riley, golf pro Jim Dent, Associated Press reporter Fred Goodall and Maritza Correia, the first black female Olympic swimmer.

Samanta Willis, administrative assistant for Campus Operations, recently earned a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Shorter College.

 

Jocelyn Wilson, scholar-in-residence for Humanities, Leadership and Hip-Hop Studies, was one of the producers of the documentary “Walking With Guns” featuring former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young and rapper T.I. Wilson and the other producers were nominated for a Best Documentary (cultural) Southeastern Regional Emmy Award. Co-writers Young and C.B. Hackworth won an Emmy for Best Documentary Writing.
