Department of Music

Curriculum

Prospective music majors must successfully complete a performance audition in at least one medium and an advisory examination in Music Theory prior to matriculating in the Department of Music. Prospective majors should consult with the music chairman.

Because of the nature of music training, music majors are required to participate in at least one of the performing ensembles in the Department of Music every semester they are enrolled (Glee Club, Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra). A music major or minor must receive the approval of the departmental faculty prior to his involvement in any musical performance. Music students are required to attend campus concerts and recitals.

Graduation with a major in music at Morehouse College includes successful completion of the "36-40 hour music core" plus the additional 6-16 hours required in an area of departmental concentration. The oral communications requirement is satisfied by completing English 351: Professional Communication, and this 3-hour course represents a designated elective, coming from the music student's elective hours. Required music courses are outlined in the section "Course Sequence for Majors in Music."

Students who select music as a minor field of concentration (Course Sequence for Minors in Music) must successfully complete prescribed courses in music theory, music history, and applied music. Such students should consult the department chair. A major in the Department of Music may qualify for departmental honors by satisfying the following requirements: eligibility for college honors, a 3.20 grade-point average within the music department, and successful completion of a senior honors project approved by the music faculty.
