Morehouse has been a pioneer in the preparation of young Black males to assume responsibility and leadership in higher education, science, and government. In view of current social conditions, the College feels it appropriate to more aggressively address the pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade education of our nation’s children in general, and that of African-American males in particular.

Teach for America and Morehouse present forum on Black Men and Education

Teach For America and Morehouse College will host a panel titled “Black Men and Education: A Discussion on the Pursuit of Excellence.” Scholars, education experts, and artists will discuss the current state of Black men in education, explore the root causes of the current situation, and seek solutions to address this issue.

Recent studies have found that black male students face unique challenges throughout their academic careers and across the country fewer than half graduate high school on time.

Host: Kwame Jackson (“The Apprentice”)

Moderators: T.J. Holmes (CNN) and Dr. Bryant Marks, professor of psychology at Morehouse College and director of The Morehouse Male Initiative

Panelists: Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, professor of sociology, Georgetown University; Dr. Robert Franklin, president of Morehouse College; Kwame Griffith, executive director of Teach For America-Atlanta, Kevin Powell, author and activist, Stic.man, hip-hop artist.

Wendy Kopp, Teach For America’s founder and chief executive officer, will also attend.
