To affirm this commitment to excellence and leadership, former President Walter E. Massey ’58 led the effort to establish and enhance the programs in the Leadership Center that are vital in realizing his vision.

• To formalize and enhance the College’s longstanding tradition of developing leaders, the College moved to create academic and co-curricular programs that teach leadership using a model based on Martin Luther King Jr.’s idea of the “Beloved Community,” an approach in which creative individuals are the catalysts for social change.

• The College also moved to broaden its work in developing students’ awareness and capabilities in international affairs by founding the Andrew Young Center for International Affairs.

• Along with gaining a global perspective, the College further extended its historical commitment to community service by establishing the Office of Community Service, a program designed to give Morehouse students the tools to serve their communities and apply leadership skills in real time.

These programs, along with the Division of Business Administration & Economics, make up the core of the academic activities that will be housed in the Leadership Center building.

The Leadership Center at Morehouse College
The creation of the Leadership Center at Morehouse College began as a conscious effort on the part of former President Walter E. Massey '58, administrators, faculty, students, alumni and friends of Morehouse College to recapture and appropriate the distilled essence of the Morehouse Tradition of Leadership through a curriculum-driven strategy.

For the past seven years, under the direction of Executive Director Dr. Walter Earl Fluker, the Leadership Center at Morehouse College has designed and directed leadership initiatives in three strategic areas: education, research and training.

The Leadership Center staff, assisted by a nine-member faculty committee, developed a 15-hour minor in Leadership Studies, which was approved by the Morehouse Board of Trustees in April 2002. In 2005, the first class of students graduated with a minor in Leadership Studies. This
new curricular program adds more formal structure to the College's production of great leaders.

Division Business Administration & Economics
Established in 1938, the Division of Business Administration and Economics at Morehouse offers the bachelor’s degree in Economics and the bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

Students majoring in business administration must select one of the following functional area concentrations: accounting, finance, management, or marketing. A minor in economics is also offered. The Business Administration program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business’s (AACSB) International Association for Management Education. The Business Administration Program sponsors chapters of Omicron Delta Epsilon (international honor society in economics) and Beta Gamma Sigma (the honor society for AACSB accredited business programs).

The Andrew Young Center for International Affairs
The Center was established at Morehouse College in 1993 as the Center for International Studies. It was renamed the Andrew Young Center for International Affairs in a ceremony held in March 1998. The Center has as its mission the globalization of the College’s academic programs, curricula, activities and the preparation of students for service in the world community.

The Office of Community Service
As the entity that coordinates and supports community service and community development at Morehouse College, the Office of Community Service develops leaders by helping Men of Morehouse gain the skills to become “social entrepreneurs.”

The office’s three main components are: community development, community-based research, and service learning. Just as entrepreneurship and leadership are critical to private sector success, so are they critical to community service. Community service at Morehouse is more than serving 10 volunteer hours per week at a local homeless shelter. It entails developing the skills to affect change, to solve problems and to lead service organizations and nonprofit agencies to new levels of success.

The Office of Community Service is the umbrella for the Emma and Joe Adams Public Service Institute, The Bonner Scholarship Program, the Federal Work Study Community Scholars Program, the Morehouse Mentoring Program, the Frederick Douglass Tutorial Institute (FDTI), and Jumpstart Atlanta.
