The Presidential Election of 2008 is approaching fast. People around the world are geared for a highly competitive campaign that might result in the first African American president, Democratic Senator Barack Obama. As the presidential campaign gets closer, students in Atlanta feel compelled to support their candidate for choice.
In the AUC students have shown their overwhelming support for Obama. At Spelman College, students have even organized a club specifically to help campaign.
"Spelman Students for Barack Obama" is a club organized to gather local support for the Senator from both the college and urban community. The focus of the organization is to support Senator Obama and to bring political awareness to Spelman, the AUC, and surrounding areas.
"Voter registration, we want to make sure that each Spelmanite is registered to vote, catering to the class of 2011 (freshman)," Membership Coordinator for the organization, McKenzie Curry said.
"We also want to bring the African American population to the polls. Our race seems to never fully use our right to vote. It is a crucial election and we need to act on our rights. We want to provide volunteer opportunities and organize Spelman and AUC events."
"Collaborating with Morehouse College & Clark Atlanta University's Student for Barack Obama groups is also crucial" stated Curry. She continued "We are in the process of publicizing trips such as the upcoming event in South Carolina entitled 'EDUCATING PEOPLE IS OUR ULTIMATE PRIORITY'"
Curry, along with Spelman students Julienne Doyle and Morgan Pierce attended a reception in North Carolina for Senator Obama. "It was an amazing experience to look around and see people from of all ethnicities who passionately support Senator Barack Obama. We received the opportunity to hear him speak to a small audience and it truly helped confirm for all three of us that he is an amazing candidate and is excellent for Presidency" Curry stated.
The Spelman Students for Barack Obama are established under the Young Democrats of America. The first general body meeting was held on November 6, 2007 at 7:00 pm in Cosby 103 on Spelman's campus.
