Dean Maurice Washington 

 

Dean Maurice Washington is a proven educator with extensive professional higher education experience in public, private and large urban institutions. For over 30 years, Dean Washington has been committed to helping students to successfully transition in and through college. He began his career as a Resident Director at Drew University followed by progressive leadership roles in student affairs at college and universities in the northeastern region. Dean Washington came to Morehouse just over 10 years ago from New York University where he served as the Director of Community Development within the Department of Residential Education. At Morehouse, he started as the Director of Housing and Residential Life then promoted to Associate Dean of the College for Residential Education and Director of Housing and Residential Life. In 2016, Dean Washington was appointed as the Associate Vice President for Student Services and Dean of the College within the Division of Student Services. As the Associate Vice President for Student Services and Dean of the College, he is responsible for collaborating with students, faculty, and staff to help create a safe and welcoming campus environment where learning is everywhere.

Dean Washington leads a diverse portfolio of seven departments in the Division of Student Services that are dedicated to providing a premier student experience that commences with New Student Orientation and continues through commencement. The Division includes 12 on-campus residence halls, New Student Orientation experience, Recreation and Intramural activities, academic and personal support through our dean's behavioral intervention model, student conduct, and four centers for student engagement. The Division also supports over 100 student organizations and leadership programs.

Dean Washington earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Drew University in Madison, NJ. Shortly thereafter, he continued on to earn his Master of Arts degree from the Teachers College at Columbia University in New York City, NY. He and his wife, Carla Debose-Washington, are the parents of a teenage son - Jordan.
