The Morehouse College Maroon Tigers basketball team can win the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division regular season title outright tonight when they host Atlanta University Center rival Clark Atlanta University at Franklin Forbes Area on the new Arthur J. McAfee Court.
Game time is 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 with the ticket booth of Forbes Arena opening at 4 p.m. A capacity crowd is expected.
Morehouse and Spelman students are admitted free with their ID as are Morehouse faculty and staff who can also bring one guest. Entry for faculty, staff and students will be on the upper-level, campus side entrance only. Those purchasing tickets will be admitted on the Fair Street side.
The Maroon Tigers, who are now ranked 9th among all of the nation’s Division II men’s basketball teams, are 23-1 this season. They are 17-1 in conference play while Clark Atlanta (22-3 overall and ranked 20th in the country) is 16-2. A CAU win would mean the two teams tie for the East Division title.
Regardless of the outcome tonight, Morehouse will get the East Division’s No. 1 seed in next week’s Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament in Birmingham, Ala., and will play next Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.
Two weeks ago, Morehouse defeated Clark Atlanta 97-96 in an epic three-overtime battle at CAU that was the first time the teams played each other when they were both nationally ranked. Morehouse was seventh in the nation while CAU was 16th.
This week, the Maroon Tigers are ranked first in the NCAA Division II South Region and have the nation’s Division II Coach of the Week in Grady Brewer ’80, according to Hoop.Dirt.com. His team, the highest scoring team in the conference, is led by the SIAC’s leading scorer, Tyrius Walker. Walker, who had the winning free throws in the win two weeks ago, averages 23.5 points per game and leads the SIAC in steals. Omar Alston is also the conference’s second-leading rebounder and is second in field goal percentage.
Clark Atlanta is led by Akil Douglas, who is their leading scorer and rebounder.
No signage, large bags or backpacks will be allowed at tonight’s game.
