Morehouse Basketball Now Ranked Among the Top 25 Teams in the Country

Date Released: January 4, 2018

For the first time in more than two decades, the undefeated Morehouse College basketball team is ranked among the best basketball teams in the country.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) released their latest rankings this week and the Maroon Tigers, who are 11-0 this season, are ranked No. 25.

According to the NABC, it’s the first time that Morehouse has been ranked since 1995.

“We’ve talked about just taking one game, one half at a time,” said Head Coach Grady Brewer ’80. “I personally thought we should have been ranked earlier this season, but we don’t control that. The only thing that we can control are wins and losses, and we just want to continue winning basketball games."

The Maroon Tigers are back on the court tonight when they host Lemoyne-Owen College at 7 p.m. on the new Arthur McAfee Court in Forbes Arena. Admission is free of charge.

Brewer said he expected to start the season strong because the top eight players from last year’s team that won 18 games returned. The winning streak has rallied fans behind the Maroon Tigers.

“I figured we had the continuity from last year. The guys we have bought in and are playing for one another," he said. "It’s working for us right now.”

Brewer is proud of his team and how they’ve been representing the College. Their athleticism shows that they not only excel in the classroom, he said.

“We can do both – athletics and academics go hand-in-hand,” Brewer said. “But you have to have kids who believe, who buy in, who stay hungry, and who stay humble.”
