The Peace Corps and Morehouse College in Collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control Present
Turning Hope into Action: Lessons Learned from Grassroots HIV/AIDs Public Health Interventions in Africa’
ATLANTA-September 29, 2006-- The Andrew Young Center for International Affairs and the Public Health Sciences Institute at Morehouse College are co-hosting a special forum on Thursday, October 5, with Ron Campbell, Peace Corps’ International Aids Relief Coordinator, and Dr. Cheryl Scott, former CDC Country Director in Tanzania.
Learn what types of projects and health extension methodologies are currently working in Africa to eradicate HIV/AIDS and how individual interventions can make a positive difference.
The Peace Corps works directly with the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (the Emergency Plan) programs in 10 of the 15 focus countries: Botswana, Guyana, Haiti, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. As a capacity-building organization, the Peace Corps places American volunteers at the grassroots level to help implement each targeted country’s strategy to combat HIV/AIDS.
During Dr. Scott’s tenure, CDC–Tanzania established successful programs that improved blood-transfusion safety, strengthened laboratory services, developed a national HIV/AIDS surveillance system, and prevented mother-to-child HIV transmission. Dr. Scott is currently on a CDC assignment with the California Department of Public Health researching the growth of virulent strains of tuberculosis caused by the HIV/AIDs virus and other factors.
