Morehouse College Sends Delegation to Brazil
ATLANTA-February 24, 2006—When a delegation of nearly two dozen faculty, administrators and students from Morehouse College and the Atlanta University Center arrive in Brazil, they will be there for more than just a South American experience. The group will travel to the continent for three weeks to share their expertise in higher education with the newly formed Citizenship University.
Morehouse administrators and faculty, and students from the Atlanta University Center will travel to Rio and Sao Paulo, Brazil – with two very different objectives. For the students, the trip will serve as the second installment of undergraduate research and a Student Service Learning program that started in 2003. As part of the program, students are required to complete a number of community service hours during their stay. They also will continue the exploration of the undergraduate research project, which will require them to spend significant time in the local communities of Rio and Sao Paulo through family home-stay visits, visits to orphanages, juvenile detention centers and guided tours of historical landmarks in and around the cities.
Citizenship University is interested in developing a liberal arts curriculum and is looking to Morehouse to serve as a model for their efforts. As such, administrators from Morehouse will partner with their professional counterparts at Citizenship University to share their expertise in:
· Developing a Liberal Arts curriculum
· Developing a student services operation that supports a liberal arts curriculum
· International education programs
· Internationalizing Historically Black Colleges/Universities
· Exchange agreements and international student recruitment
Citizenship University is one of the newest developments in affirmative action practices in Brazil. It is an institution founded specifically to educate black students in Latin America. It is a non-profit, private business college with plans to enroll up to 10,000 students on campuses throughout the city of Sao Paulo. The curriculum will emphasize African-Brazilian culture.
Morehouse is of particular interest to Citizenship University because of its rich tradition and success in both the production of Black leaders and the promotion, through instruction, of the leadership philosophies of such internationally recognized leaders as Benjamin E. Mays, Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King Jr.
Ranked three times as the number one college in the nation for educating African American students by Black Enterprise magazine, and recognized by The Wall Street Journal as one of the top feeder schools for the 15 most prominent graduate and professional schools in the country, Morehouse College is the nation’s largest, private liberal arts college for men. Founded in 1867, the College enrolls approximately 3,000 students. Morehouse is one of only two Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCU) to produce three Rhodes Scholars.
