It took me no time at all to get acquainted with the Principality, the spacious ports, the winding, narrow alleys flooded with sunlight, the almost unreal blue waters of the Mediterranean, and the vibrant social scene. To think, a Southern guy like me, from Orangeburg, South Carolina, "living the life" in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, 5000 miles away from all things familiar to me.
I was amazed at how much His Serene Highness Prince Albert II knew about Morehouse College. But then again, I wasn't. Call it arrogance. I call it the Morehouse Mystique.
During my experience here, I have worked on a Humanitarian Film Festival Effort, Cinema Vérité, which supports land mine awareness, HIV/AIDS awareness prevention and research for many other societal ills. I also was given the opportunity to serve as the live talent coordinator for the World Music Awards 2007. I was able to work with all the celebrities performing for the show and I chose the transition music for each segment (just in case you've seen the show already).
I thought American style was unique, but there's nothing like some good ole European garb. Talk about a new perspective. And the social scene here is amazing. Kanye West was right on point when he penned the track, "Flashing Lights." The glitz and glamour really do exist!
Sometimes I question why I decided to study abroad my final year of my undergraduate career. But the more I think about it, the more I am thankful for the timing. I had reached a point in my life when I needed to step outside of the AUC and discover a taste of what the rest of the world had in store for me. It's true, I did fly back to experience my senior year homecoming, but even that has taught me to cherish the intrinsic connection I have to Dear Old Morehouse. My experience here in Monaco has taught me that Men of Morehouse and Morehouse Men alike are destined to achieve the extraordinary.
