Postcards from Around the Globe

MAY 29, 2007 - SOUTH AFRICA - Mauri J. Robinson

“I’m in so much pain that I can’t feel my body.”

This was a statement that I heard today as we shadowed local caregivers in the semi-rural area of Evaton, South Africa. As we visited each home, I realized how fortunate I am. To visit suffering patients and see how much pain they were in was somethingI will never forget. So often we complain about our situations and the struggles we face as Americans, but today I had the opportunity to visit the homes of individuals who have endured more pain and sorrow than anyone can imagine. The home visit that sticks with me the most is when we visited a woman who had been reduced to sleeping on the floor for 11 years because of a spine surgery that went terribly wrong. I felt so moved to see that--despite the pain this woman was in--she still had a smile on her face that brightened the entire room. The aim of the Oprah South Africa Leadership trip is to cultivate and groom tomorrow’s ethical leaders. Visiting the poverty-stricken homes of Evaton gave each scholar a key component of “humility” after witnessing what we did.
