TO SEE YOUNG PEOPLE STARTING TO TAKE CHARGE, IT'S WONDERFUL

THURSDAY, 3:45 A.M., REST AREA JUST INSIDE THE LOUISIANA STATE LINE

The stars light up the Louisiana sky around 4 a.m. The two buses from the AUC, with its sleeping passengers relaxing under blankets or jackets, have just stopped at a rest stop just across the Mississippi/Louisiana border, the Mississippi River.

Rasheed Muhammad of Chicago is on another charter bus full of postal workers who have been riding all night and who also decide to rest. Muhammad smiles when he learned that the two buses behind him contained students from Morehouse, Clark Atlanta and Spelman.

"It's just encouraging to see our young people involved," he says. "You look at the civil rights struggle and it was led by young people. To see young people starting to take charge, it's wonderful. It's their future. It's a wonderful thing to see."
