Aspiring International Journalist Becomes College’s Latest Fulbright Scholar

(June 3, 2009) -- African culture has always been an interest for Wendell H. Marsh ’09. Working on Morehouse’s student newspaper piqued his interest in journalism. This year he begins work on combining both into a professional career.
Marsh is the College’s latest Fulbright Scholars Program award winner. The program – named in honor of the late U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright who pushed for an international exchange program in the 1940s – is designed to increase mutual understanding between people in the United States and in other countries.
After a summer internship in Washington, D.C. as a reporting intern with international news wire service Thompson Reuters, he will attend American University in Cairo, Egypt to study Arabic for one year.
“I am beyond excited,” Marsh said. “Even before I came to Morehouse, I knew that I wanted to do a competitive fellowship such as a Fulbright. Now that my college career has come to a close, I am filled with a sense of completion as I have achieved a number of my highest aspirations.”
Marsh becomes one of 3,500 students in more than 150 countries who are Fulbright scholars this year.
He graduated Phi Beta Kappa as an English major and French minor. During his senior year, Marsh oversaw digitization of the The Maroon Tiger newspaper as director of new media while at the same time creating and editing video as an intern for the Atlanta weekly newspaper, Creative Loafing.
From June until August, Marsh will report on the economy for Reuters. For his Fulbright studies in Cairo, Marsh will soak up Arabic language and culture.
“I’m very interested in a journalism career as an international correspondent,” said Marsh, who has studied in Switzerland, France and Senegal. “For my interest, which is to report on Africa and the Middle East, Arabic is absolutely important. Going to Egypt and learning Arabic for a year will give me a rich and fulfilling experience in and of itself while putting me on the fast track for my career.”
