Morehouse, Spelman Launch Safety Initiative
Morehouse College has joined with Spelman College to launch an initiative to promote a climate of safety and mutual respect.
President Walter E. Massey ’58 and Spelman President Beverly D. Tatum jointly announced the presidential initiative, which will be headed by Dr. Kevin Rome ’89, vice president for Student Services at Morehouse, and Dr. Sherry Turner, vice president for Student Affairs at Spelman. The initiative will focus on diversity and tolerance, while emphasizing Morehouse’s institutional values. Faculty, staff and students throughout the Atlanta University Center will be involved in dialogue geared toward educating students about violence prevention and self-protection.
“We are concerned about ways to counteract the messages of the popular culture that glorify sexual promiscuity and exploitive relationships between women and men,” said President Massey. “Between Morehouse and Spelman, we educate the next generation of leaders. As such, we feel it is our responsibility to take a joint leadership role in addressing this important issue.”
Morehouse College has a no-tolerance position on acts of violence of any kind.
