Theme and Program Goals

The Morehouse Pan-African Global Experience (MPAGE) is the College’s signature education abroad program that supports a unique mission and commitment to Africa and the African Diaspora. Previous MPAGE projects have included (1) curriculum development; (2) education and civic engagement abroad; (3) faculty development and research; and (4) student development and research. MPAGE II builds upon these successes with a vision to make education abroad and its benefits more accessible and affordable; language learning (Portuguese and Spanish) more relevant and practical; and international studies more unified. The project will enrich instruction with relevant content that focuses on public health, education, and cultural heritage studies of the African Diaspora. MPAGE II expects to increase the number of Morehouse students who complete their education with practical proficiency in a foreign language and an international experience; and to increase the involvement of General Education faculty members in delivering international education. The ACBEU Portuguese and Cultural Program in Brazil is the host institution.

Curriculum & Course Offerings

The student experience consists of concentrated 16-day MPAGE II Bahia Brazil Education Abroad Program in May 12-28, 2017, preceded by Atlanta international community engagement and by enrollment for credit during Spring Semester (using financial aid) with language instruction and assessment; local international community engagement; capstone demonstration projects; and coursework in public health and/or sociology with a focus on contemporary issues in global health, education, and sustainability. The education abroad experience includes home stay with Brazilian families, Brazilian guest lecturers for seminars and workshops; supervised civic engagement and cultural excursions and service learning projects; participation in holiday and commemorative events; and cultural enrichment tours including day and weekend trips to historic sites, museums, theaters, markets, and churches.
