Morehouse College Public Health Sciences Institute (PHSI)

  • Morehouse College Public Health Sciences Institute (PHSI)
Project: IMHOTEP and Division of Applied Research and Technology (DART)/PHSI programs
: These two programs are supported by a five-year cooperative agreement award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Public Health Services, in Atlanta, Georgia. The cooperative agreement was promulgated to address the need to increase the knowledge and skills of minority students in epidemiology, biostatistics and occupational safety & health.

Through these two programs, students are offered opportunities to train with researchers at the CDC headquarters in Atlanta, GA, as well as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) laboratories in Cincinnati, OH; Pittsburgh, PA; Spokane, W; and Morgantown, WV. Additional opportunities were provided this past summer at CDC sites in Anchoarge, Alaska, as well as at state health departments in Oakland, CA; and Madison, WI. This summer we are pleased to offer up to four (4) additional student researcher positions with the GAP program in Tanzania.

    Project: IMHOTEP
Project: IMHOTEP, an 11-week internship, is designed for students with some training or course background in biostatistics, epidemiology, occupational safety and health, or the health sciences. At the outset of the program, students participate in short courses (two weeks) dealing with epidemiology, biostatistics and occupational safety and health. This training also consists of lectures provided by CDC and PHSI personnel, home study courses, computer based training and "hands on" field experiences with CDC professionals. In the remainder of the program, students gain valuable work experience in processing, analyzing, and presenting the results of existing data sets from various divisions of CDC.

    DART/PHSI
The DART/PHSI program is 11 weeks of intensive research and data analysis with NIOSH professionals. The NIOSH DART focuses on developing scientific and technical information for application in reducing workplace hazards. Interns in the DART/PHSI program have opportunities to work on research projects that are exciting and of national importance.

To qualify for either program, candidates must be either a rising or graduating senior, or recent college graduate. The DART/PHSI program is also open to sophomores. Applicants must demonstrate and active interest in public health, with a particular focus on biostatistics, epidemiology, and occupational safety and health. Candidates will be evaluated on academic performance, application essay, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities.

Attached are flyers suitable for posting that include descriptions of the two internship programs, as well as applications. We are particularly interested in increasing the numbers of well-trained African-American, American Indian and Hispanic American public health professionals. If you know of any students who would qualify for these programs, I would appreciate your forwarding the attached information to them and suggesting they contact me. If you have any questions about the announcement or PHSI's work, please feel free to contact me at 404-681-2800 x2027 or email JJenkins@Morehouse.edu. You can also visit our website: www.morehouse.edu/publichealth. The application deadline for both programs is January 31, 2004.
