  • University of Maryland

At the University of Maryland, there is a new NSF-funded program which includes a summer program (SPIRAL, for Summer Program in Research and Learning) for undergraduate mathematics majors. The project's director is Prof. Dan Rudolph. Prof. Duane Cooper here at Morehouse is a co-director. Each of six partner institutions (Morehouse, Spelman, Xavier, N.C. A&T, Bowie State, and Trinity Coll.) are allowed to send three students to the program this summer. These departments are requested to nominate three students and one alternate by March 14

Briefly, this is a six-week experience; the idea is that students should have taken Set Theory but not necessarily a whole lot more. This summer's program will consist primarily of a course on theory of games, as well as small group research projects. The main purpose is to strengthen students' abilities to prove theorems through new content, as opposed to just rehashing previous courses.
