Morehouse College Breast Cancer Walk Celebrates 10 Years

College paces among highest earning participants in American Cancer Society Walk

Atlanta, September 24, 2009 – For 10 years the men of Morehouse have been lacing up to stomp out breast cancer, resulting in hundreds of men, walking dozens of miles to raise thousands of dollars for breast cancer research.

The two-mile walk will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009. It will begin at the historic Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel on the Morehouse College Campus. Among those participating will be the world famous Morehouse Glee Club, who will serenade the walkers, and the Morehouse College ROTC.

Since its involvement in the annual Breast Cancer Walk, Morehouse has raised nearly $150,000 for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer effort, making the College among the top producers for the cause.

The 2K was founded by Morehouse staff member and 10 year cancer survivor Sandra Walker. Walker says she organized the walk after she and two other Morehouse colleagues were diagnosed with the disease.

“We were all diagnosed within three years of one another,” said Walker. “I wanted to do something to inform the community and the Morehouse College family about the rising number of minorities who are affected with the disease.” The entire College community has embraced the walk over the past decade and a record number are expected to participate this year to celebrate a decade of service.

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 250,000 women in the United States developed some form of breast cancer in 2008. However, because of early detection, improved treatment, and education the number of deaths is shrinking.

Registration for the walk is $20 and includes a t-shirt. For more information or to register contact Sandra Walker at (404) 215-2675.
