An Interfaith Concert Celebrating the ties between Jewish Americans and African Americans

Part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration

ATLANTA-December 12, 2005--For centuries, the experiences of Jews and African Americans have been linked by struggle and perseverance. Now, Morehouse College and The Temple on Peachtree are coming together to bring the world premiere of TIKVAH, a brilliant musical extravaganza, to Atlanta.

TIKVAH will be performed in celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Saturday, January 21 at
7 p.m. in the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel on the campus of Morehouse College. The concert is free and open to the public.

TIKVAH, meaning HOPE, is a cutting-edge multimedia oratorio with music and dance, conceived and created by composer and Atlanta native Burton Beerman. The interfaith concert is based on the memoirs of Torah scholar and Holocaust survivor Phillip Markowicz. Performing will be the illustrious Ebenezer Baptist Church Choir and the historic Temple Singers. The joint chorus will be conducted by award winning composer, performer and conductor Dr. Uzee Brown Jr., chair of the Department of Music at Morehouse College.

“Certainly the relevance of what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. exemplified in the struggle for human rights can be paralleled with the themes of TIKVAH,” said Brown.

Others who will perform include the virtuoso Red Clay Saxophone Quartet of Greensboro, North Carolina; New York’s Andrea Rae (soprano); and the dance duo of Anthony Elijah Gilmore (Afrika Dance Group) and choreographer Celesta Haraszti (soloist with the Hungarian Ballet Theatre).
