A Date with Destiny and the Doctor Who Helped a Coach Survive
Morehouse Head Coach and Emory Doctor meet face-to-face for the first time since accident on I-85
ATLANTA-August 25, 2005—When Morehouse College Head Coach Terry Beauford set out on a routine trip from Virginia to his new home in Atlanta, little did he know that a guardian angel would be on the road with him.
Just outside of Charlotte, Beauford swerved to miss another car traveling on interstate 85. That’s when the SUV Beauford was driving flipped several times. Beauford was ejected from the vehicle and suffered several life- threatening injuries. As fate would have it, Michael Starsiak, a resident at Emory University, was following closely behind Beauford when the accident took place.
Starsiak immediately pulled over to aid Beauford at the scene. At the time, the physician had no idea that Beauford would end up living in the Atlanta area as well. What he knew was that the coach needed medical attention immediately. Starsiak administered what medical help he could and stayed with Beauford until the emergency vehicles arrived.
This Thursday night, during Beauford’s debut as Morehouse College’s new head coach, the two will meet face to face again.
It will be the first time the two have seen each other since their paths crossed on interstate 85 – almost two months ago to the day.
