Nearly 1,200 Get an Introduction to College Life During Summer Academy

An interesting thing happened when the 2009 Pre-Freshman Summer Program (PSP) was about to end – some of the high school students decided they wanted to remain at Morehouse.

“I’ve never had that testimony,” said Anne Watts, associate vice president of Academic Affairs. “They were trying to figure out a way they could be early admits at Morehouse or a way they could take courses here, as well as take courses (at their high schools). That was very affirming.”

Tuskegee Airman Discovers Morehouse Roots

Alexander Jefferson had no idea he was connected to Morehouse College.

But a few years ago, the 87-year-old former Tuskegee Airman and prisoner-of-war found out something very interesting: his great-grandfather is William Jefferson White, the founder of Morehouse College.

“Old-fashioned people never talked much about history,” Jefferson said during a campus visit in July. “My mother and father never talked about history. Nobody ever talked about slavery…So I had no idea.”

Breast Cancer Awareness Walk Scheduled for September 26

Ten years ago, Sandra Walker won her battle with breast cancer and became a survivor. She commemorated the triumph by launching the Morehouse College Breast Cancer Awareness Walk.

Today, the fall event annually draws approximately 400 participants who walk a two-mile trek around the Atlanta University Center in an effort to support the breast cancer research of the American Cancer Society. Over the decade, the walk has raised $146,000.
