Research
A key goal is to enhance the problem solving skills of program participants through mentored research. In recent years students who participated during the academic year or summer internship (Project IMHOTEP) program have been expected to do research, and in some instances some students have been placed in research laboratories upon request. The vast majority of this research has been done under the direction of research preceptors at CDC. The Institute is currently developing a research component. The research initiative will involve collaboration with other public health scientists from the Atlanta University Center. The long-term objective is the implementation of a community-based cohort study in several census tracts, which will help elucidate the factors associated with many of the disease categories that exhibit a significant black/white differential (e.g. prenatal disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer etc.)
