This project provides cross-cultural immersion and international exposure through travel and study for students from Morehouse and partner institutions in South Africa. This bi-directional, bi-cultural study tour focuses on cultural and service learning activities and is supported by an endowed gift from the Oprah Foundation.
In May 2009, six students and two faculty travelled to Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa to participate in extensive academic, cultural and civic engagement activities. Each phase provided initial steps that were closely interlocked with one another, building upon each component, and leading to a comprehensive, lucid experience for the students. Journaling was used as a tool to record the experiences and capture the personal impact of the program. Through reflections and personal narratives, participants created a comprehensive living document of the study tour. They returned to U.S. with a greater understanding of the social-political and economic situation of South Africa.
