Established in 2001, the Morehouse Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, national leadership honor society, is sponsored by the Leadership Center at Morehouse College. Dr. Walter Earl Fluker is the ODK Faculty Advisor and Dr. Melvinia Turner King is the ODK Faculty Secretary.  Omicron Delta Kappa was founded December 3, 1914, at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia, by fifteen student and faculty leaders. The founders formulated the idea that leadership of exceptional quality and versatility in college should be recognized, that representatives in all phases of college life should cooperate in a worthwhile endeavor, and that outstanding students, faculty and administration members should meet on a basis of mutual interest, understanding and helpfulness.

The purpose of the Omicron Delta Kappa Society is threefold:

  • To recognize those who have attained a high standard of efficiency in collegiate activities and to inspire others to strive for conspicuous attainments along similar lines
  • To bring together the most representative students in all phases of collegiate life and thus to create an organization which will help to mold the sentiment of the institution on questions of local and intercollegiate interest
  • To bring together members of the faculty and student body of the institution, as well as other Omicron Delta Kappa members, on a basis of mutual interest and understanding

Membership in Omicron Delta Kappa is awarded to undergraduate junior and senior students, students of graduate and professional schools and colleges of the institution, members of the faculty and administration and alumni. Election to membership is based on merit, irrespective of a person’s affiliation with other organizations, and without solicitation or propaganda, such as rushing or social pressure, to insure acceptance of the invitation to membership. Membership is as much an obligation and responsibility in citizenship as it is a mark of highest distinction and honor.

It’s time for a change!  Everyone is now talking about change all over the world.  I believe that the Men of the Morehouse Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa will bring that desired change. We are determined to be the example of ethical leadership at Morehouse College. Our minds are set on Leadership and our hearts are on service.

Derrick Johnson

Above all things, I would like to be known as a leader, a believer and a man of Morehouse.  A leader has a calling. A believer has a foundation. A man of Morehouse has a purpose. Service is not some thing that you should do; it is some thing that you must do. Always remember to do the right thing first. It is the right thing to do.

The students, faculty, staff, administration, and honoris causa members of the Morehouse Circle reflect membership in ODK as leadership being equally balanced between obligation and responsibility, as well as the highest scholastic distinction and honor.  This supports the mission of the Leadership Center at Morehouse to    develop ethical leaders serving public, private, and social sectors in local, national, and international communities.

Executive Director of the Leadership Center at Morehouse and ODK Faculty Advisor
As part of President Franklin’s strategic vision of producing “renaissance men with social conscience,” the Morehouse College ODK Circle provides qualified students who exhibit excellence in scholarship, leadership and character to engage in service to others.  Faculty and staff are invited to this very special honors program in leadership.  They provide mentorship and serve alongside students.  Since its establishment at Morehouse College in 2002, some of our finest graduates have served as members and in leadership roles on campus and beyond.
