The Leadership Center at Morehouse College

International Leadership Program

The International Leadership Program fosters international awareness and bridge building between students, faculty and community leaders in the United States and their counterparts in other global settings. The International Leadership Program projects include:

Oprah South Africa Leadership Project provides cross-cultural immersion and international exposure through travel and study for students from Morehouse and partnering institutions, CIDA City Campus and Wilberforce Community College.  It is one of the nation’s premiere endowed programs for undergraduate service in South Africa.  Training is designed to prepare students and faculty as global leaders through a comprehensive academic and participatory experience grounded in the philosophy of ethical leadership.

  • In 2007, this bi-directional education and cultural exchange program provided the opportunity for both groups, 20 from Morehouse and 18 from CIDA and Wilberforce, to spend two weeks immersed in culture and community service around the issue of HIV/AIDS.
  • In 2008, 19 students and faculty members built upon the success of the 2007 project through collaboration with Georgia State University in a two-week study abroad tour of the Johannesburg and Cape Town areas of South Africa. In establishing this academic structure, a foundation was provided for increasing local, regional and international collaborations with other educational institutions.

African Presidential Archives and Research Center (APARC), a collaborative initiative with Boston University, provided opportunities for students to interact directly with world leaders and gain an inside view of the African political arena. As part of the roundtable experience, students meet and interact with former African presidents and other dignitaries.

  • In 2007, His Excellency Antonio Monteiro, former president of Cape Verde, spent three days in residence providing the opportunity for the Morehouse community to interface with a former African president.
  • Annually a delegation of students and staff travel to Boston to participate in the
    Safari
African Presidential Roundtable joining with others convening in Johannesburg, South Africa and Los Angeles, California featuring closed-door discussions with major private sector leaders, heads of major multilateral organizations, and key international political leaders and policy makers, as well as a videoconference connecting all three sites.

The International Ethical Leadership Certificate Program was proposed within the Quality Enhancement Plan Committee as part of the College’s strategic plan for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

    • This campus wide certificate program in international ethical leadership engages participants in specific, customized leadership initiatives within and outside the class room environment providing knowledge and experiences for being an ethical leader in a global environment.
    • A priori, we believe that inculcating the attitudes and values of compassion, respect for others, a moral and ethical compass, courage and vision, will prepare/compel participants to lead, regardless of the circumstances they find themselves.
