FAQs
What distinguishes the Leadership Center at Morehouse College from other leadership centers and training programs?
The Leadership Center at Morehouse College is dedicated to advancing ethical leadership as an urgently needed model in leadership development. The Center seeks to develop a new generation of leaders committed to solutions to contemporary ethical and social concerns.
The Leadership Center is an interdisciplinary academic center within Morehouse College, the nation’s only historically black male, four-year, liberal arts institution.
What is “ethical leadership”?
The Center’s Ethical Leadership Model™ expands traditional understandings of leadership. In addition to the traditional skills of critical thinking, team building and problem solving, ethical leadership strongly emphasizes personal moral and spiritual development as well as the development of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, empathy, courage and other “soft skills.” Ethical leaders, then, are physically and emotionally whole, spiritually disciplined, intellectually astute, and morally anchored. They seek to cultivate the power of character, civility and community.
Why is ethical leadership important?
Increasingly, the daily lives of citizens and communities all over the world are being challenged by the growth of impersonal systems dominated by power and money. This dynamic is giving rise to complex moral issues and widespread injustice, powerlessness and despair. In this environment, traditional leadership is losing its authority and influence. The spiritual and moral imperatives of ethical leadership, on the other hand, challenge us to develop strategies that address these contemporary issues head-on and in ways that promote integrity, justice and a sense of community.
What are the major programs offered by the Leadership Center?
The Leadership Center designs and offers an array of programs and initiatives, which fall under three major program categories. Education Programs reflect leadership as an interdisciplinary area of study. They enable participants to study, learn and articulate the critical leadership issues affecting civil society. Research Programs collect, analyze and publish information and data related to ethical leadership. Training Programs provide on-campus leadership training and consultation using custom-designed curricula, civic engagement, service learning and other strategies.
Does the Leadership Center offer courses for credit toward graduation?Yes. Among our offerings is the Leadership Studies minor—a rigorous, interdisciplinary academic course of study consisting of a 15-hour curriculum that provides students with in-depth exposure to the concepts, theories and history of leadership. In addition, a 3-hour course, Ethical Leadership and the Crisis in Global North-South Relations, is offered once each academic year.
Who besides Morehouse College students may take advantage of Leadership Center programs?
The various programs of the Leadership Center may be of interest to, and are open to those who teach, study and practice leadership, including leadership scholars, public officials, community leaders, and heads of business, religious and educational institutions.
