Empowering Leadership in Local Communities (ELLC), established as a cooperative effort between Morehouse College, the Second District of Los Angeles County, The California Endowment, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, the Weingart Foundation, and Community Coalition, seeks to develop leadership skills in boys and young men of color from highly selected communities.  Through a strategic process, this organization provides opportunities for ethical leadership training to organizations throughout Los Angeles County to:

  • Increase the human resource capacity of local youth development organizations to integrate leadership training in their ongoing programming
  • Provide customized leadership training, mentoring and ongoing technical assistance to 29 Los Angeles County-based youth development service providers
  • Provide a platform to engage policy officials, educators, community organizers, the media, businesses, and other public and private sector stakeholders
  • Planning meeting of Los Angeles Community organizers and funders was held during March 2012 in the Los Angeles office of the California Endowment to explore next steps upon completion of the current $265,000 pilot project

During the summer 2011, the project sponsored a week-long Summer Leadership Institute at Morehouse College providing ethical leadership training for 29 program directors and others in direct service roles from Brotherhood Crusade, Community Coalition, Los Angeles Urban League, SEIU-ULTCW, T.H.E. Clinic, Watts Healthcare and West Angeles Community Development.
