March 7, 2009 – Khiry Lee and Turner Coggins were two of the brightest stars for the Morehouse Flying Maroon Tigers at the Tiger Open Track and Field Meet, hosted by Savannah State University.
Jumpers Steven Patterson and Derreck Smith also had outstanding performances in the 10-team “open” competition.
Lee, a sophomore, political science major from Houston, TX, scored points in two middle-distance races and a team relay. Coggins, a junior business administration major from LaPlata, MD scored captured second and fifth place finishes in throwing events.
Patterson, a sophomore, business administration major from Marietta, GA leaped 6’-6” and captured first place in the high jump competition.
Smith, a senior physical education major from Newnan, GA, hopped, skipped and jumped his way to victory in the triple jump, with a distance of 45’-7.5.” William Payne took sixth in the triple jump, with a leap of 44’-4.74.”
Lee took fourth place in the 800-meter run, in a time of 1:59.78. Michael Vinson (2:04.53) and Abraham Kiprotich (2:12.71) finished in the 12 and 17 positions, but failed to factor in the scoring.
Lee also ran a 4:14.63 and finished second in the 1500-meter run. Michael Vinson grabbed sixth place, clocking in at 4:16.48.
Turner Coggins heaved the shot put 46’-5” and grabbed second place and eight points. Coggins hurled his way to fifth place in the discus event, tossing the discus 135’-6.”
Brennen Buckner (50:66) and Tony Reynolds (51:12) finished in the sixth and seventh spots in the 400-meter dash.
Imad Wakeel clocked 16:02 and finished in the number five spot, in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Running as the Morehouse “A” team, Victor Blackett, Brennen Buckner, Brendan Fludd and Emanuel collected three points and finished in sixth place, with time on 43.27, in the 4x100-meter relay.
In the 4x200-meter relay, Khiry Lee, Charlston Manning, Kevin Minott and Devanier Williams, ran a 1:35.72, to finish in eighth place and collect one point.
With a time of 3:29.46, the Morehouse “B” team of Miles Kirk, Hasaan Rasheed, Matt Tuffuor and Imad Wakeel grabbed sixth place and scored three points in the 4x400-meter relay.
John Mitchell took sixth place in the shot put, with a 43-foot toss.
