August 21 -- ATLANTA -- Nationally renowned track coach Napoleon B. Cobb has returned to the Morehouse College Athletics Department as the assistant head coach of the track and field team.
Cobb will work closely with equally renowned head coach Willie H. Hill to continue the unparalleled success of the Morehouse track and field and cross country programs.
Coach Cobb spent 11 years (1978-88) as the head coach at Morehouse and produced numerous All-Americans and world class student-athletes.
Most of Cobb’s coaching was done on the high school level. First at DuSable High School in Chicago, then returning to his native Georgia, Cobb amassed an unprecedented record of turning out team and individual champions.
At the former Gordon High School (now McNair), Cobb’s teams won state track and field championships in 1975, 1976 and 1978.
His greatest success was achieved at Southwest Dekalb High School, which he turned into a perennial track and field powerhouse.
At the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Cobb became the first coach ever to have two high school students win Olympic medals. Southwest Dekalb’s Angelo Taylor won the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles and Terrence Trammell won the silver medal in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Coach Cobb received a degree in physical education from Tennessee State University in Nashville. He is the father of four children: Katanya, Shan, Napoleon A. and Jabari.
