June 25, 2008 – ATLANTA – Three Maroon Tigers will compete against the nation’s best athletes in an attempt to represent Morehouse and the United States in the upcoming Beijing Olympics.
High jumper Keith Moffatt, hurdler Damian Prince and long jumper Randall Flimmons have qualified for the U.S. Olympics trials, to begin this weekend in Eugene, OR.
Moffatt, one of the top-ranked jumpers in the world, is an automatic qualifier and will move immediately into the pool of finalists. Flimmons and Prince are “provisional” qualifiers and have a tougher road to travel. They must compete in early rounds against a larger pool of other provisional qualifiers, to make it to the finals.
In 2004, Moffatt came within a quarter-of-an-inch of making it onto the three-man US Olympics high jump team. The senior from Newport News, VA jumped the same height as the third-place finisher, but lost out because of more misses at a lower height. Moffatt’s best height this season is 2.28 meters.
Prince, a senior from Decatur, GA, is the three-time SIAC and two-time NCAA Division II champion in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. His best time is 49.21.
Flimmons, a senior from Columbus, MS, won the 2007 SIAC and NCAA Division II long jump championship. His best leap was 7.88 meters.
If any of the Maroon Tigers make the team, it will be the first time that Morehouse will be represented in the Olympics since alumnus Edwin Moses ’78 made the team and won a gold medal in 1976 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Senior Keith Horn provisionally qualified for the trials in the 200-meter dash, but chose to concentrate on summer school rather than travel to Oregon.
Many of the Olympic trial events will be televised on NBC and the USA television networks. Check local listings. For more information, visit www.usatf.org.
Assistant track and field coach Christopher Doomes ’93 will coach the Morehouse student-athletes at the trials.
