May 24, 2008 – WALNUT, CA – Just as he did last year, Damian Prince leaped and dashed his way to victory in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships.
Prince, a junior from Decatur, ran the event in 50.05 and beat out nine of the nation’s best Division II middle-distance hurdles, to defend his NCAA crown. His closest competitor was the same runner who finished second last year – Sean Bergstedt, of Truman State, who ran a 50.60.
Prince, the three-time SIAC hurdles champion, scored the only 10 points for Morehouse, which finished tied for seventeenth place. In 2007, the Maroon Tigers took third place, for the best finish ever.
Abilene Christian University repeated as the men's division champion.
The 400-meter hurdles is the event that catapulted Morehouse alumnus Edwin Moses ’78 to fame. Moses, who was recently voted into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame, won 122 consecutive races over 10 years and three Olympic medals.
Prince will advance to the USA National Championships, to be held in Indianapolis, June 18-21.
