May 3, 2008 – ATLANTA – Morehouse captured second place in the South Region Coaches’ Association Track and Field Championships, held Saturday at B.T. Harvey Stadium. The competition of more than 13 teams was only the second South regional ever held and the first hosted by Morehouse.
With strong performances in the field events, the Maroon Tigers garnered 118 points, to finish behind Albany State, with 122 points, and ahead of Harding University, with 113.5 points.
Barry Batson was one of the top Maroon Tiger performers, claiming the only first-place finish among Morehouse athletes. The junior from Christ Church, Barbados took first place in the long jump and second place in the triple jump and javelin throw.
The Morehouse 4x100-meter relay team ran a 41:19, to take fifth place and “provisionally” qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships, which will be held May 22-24, in Walnut, CA.
The 4x400-meter relay team, which last year won the NCAA D-II national championship, finished second, in a time of 3:18.25.
Damian Prince, the two-time SIAC and defending NCAA D-II champion in the 400-meter hurdles did not compete in his signature event, due to a tight hamstring. Brendon Fludd had the best finish in that event, in a time of 58.06.
In the Shot Putt: Turner Coggins took second place, with a throw of 13.27 meters, Matt Tuffuor came in fourth place, with a toss of 12.59 meters and John Mitchell grabbed seventh place, with a heave of 12.18 meters.
In the Hammer Throw: Charles Winslow finished in third place, with a distance of 40.49 meters; Turner Coggins took fifth, with 36.64 meters and Peter Hungiapuko snagged eighth place, with 33.37 meters.
In the High Jump: Dan Harris jumped 1.85 meters and finished fifth and Laurence Lea took seventh, jumping 1.72 meters.
Richmond Oliver took second place in the pole vault, with a height of 3.66 meters, and Laurence Lea tied for seventh, at 2.90 meters.
Hasaan Rasheed had a busy day for Morehouse, anchoring the second-place 4x400-meter relay team and grabbing fourth place in the triple jump and sixth place in the long jump.
Julius Hanks ran a 10:28.14, to finish sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
In the Discus Throw: Matt Tuffuor had the second-longest throw of 41.60 meters, Turner Coggins took fifth, with 38.83 meters and John Mitchell finished seventh, at 34.89 meters.
Lemario Bland dashed to fourth place in the 100 meters, in a time of 10.72, and Chevon Cunningham took ninth place in the 200-meter dash, in a time of 22.20.
Dreyfus Clemons finished fourth in the 800-meter run and ninth in the 1,500-meter run.
