MOREHOUSE WINS BACK-TO-BACK SIAC TITLES

April 21, 2007 – TUSCALOOSA, AL – The Flying Maroon Tigers won their second straight SIAC track and field championship with a commanding performance in field events and a solid showing on the track.

Morehouse has now won 10 of the last 13 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and 13 overall.

The 234-167 margin of victory over second-place Albany State was one of the largest in school history.

Taking complete control from the opening bell, the Flying Maroon Tigers completely overshadowed the competition in the field events.

Senior strongman Billy Wooten amassed a valuable 17 points in the throws – events that traditionally were weaknesses in the Maroon Tiger arsenal. The senior from Durham, NC took first place in the hammer throw, third place in the discus and eighth place in the shot put to amass 17 points.

In the high jump, the Maroon Tigers captured the top three spots. Keith Moffatt won his fourth consecutive SIAC championship, with a leap of 6’-8.” Evan Flax jumped the same height, but had more misses and was awarded second. Randall Flimmons tied for third with a jump of 6’4.” Moffatt still holds the SIAC high jump record of 7’-4 ˝” that he set in 2004.

In the triple jump, Morehouse again went 1-2-3. Evan Flax took first, Randall Flimmons second and Barry Batson third.

Oliver Richmond won his second SIAC pole vault competition, with a height of 12’9 ˝.”

Flimmons one of the College’s most versatile athletes turned in an outstanding all-around performance in the two-day championships. In addition to finishing second in the triple jump and third in the high jump, the senior drama major from Columbus, MS won the javelin throw and the long jump and took third in the decathlon.

With his leap of 24’-7” Flimmons outdistanced teammate Evan Flax, who took second place at 23’-9.”

On the track, the Maroon Tigers were nearly as impressive as their teammates on the field. Morehouse took first in the 400-meter hurdles, first in the 4x400-meter relays, second in the 4x100-meter relays, second and fourth in the 400-meter dash, second and sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and second, fifth and seventh in the 5,000-meter run.

Damian Prince, the junior speedster from Decatur, GA, solidified his reputation as one of the top athletes in the region, with a victory in the 400-meter hurdles, a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash and by anchoring the winning 4x400-meter relay team. Prince ran a 53.49. Morehouse junior Curtis Dayson, took third at 53.98 and Evan Flax finished seventh.

The SIAC record of 49.59 for the 400-meter hurdles is still held by Morehouse legend Edwin Moses. Set in 1977, the record is one of the longest standing high-marks in SIAC history.

Junior Julius Hanks score points in three endurance events, finishing second in the steeplechase, fourth in the 1,500 meters and fifth in the 5,000 meters.

Junior speedster Marquis Horn sprinted to a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 21.14.

Senior Alex Brickler, a long-distance mainstay for four years at Morehouse gutted out a second-place finish in the 5,000 meters, despite a two foot injuries that kept him sidelined and in a protective boot nearly all season.

Many of Morehouse’s impact runners, jumpers and throwers are expected to return next season, guaranteeing a competitive team on the regional and national level for years to come.
