June 14, 2007 – ATLANTA – Three of Morehouse’s premier student-athletes will compete in the nation’s top track and field meet this weekend for a chance to represent the College and the United States in the World Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan, in August.
Long jumper Randall Flimmons, high jumper Keith Moffatt and hurdler Damian Prince will travel to Indianapolis to showcase their talents at the AT&T USA National Track and Field Championships, June 20-24. At stake is the opportunity of a lifetime – a trip to the year’s biggest stage in track and field.
The top three finishers in each event will represent the United States at the World Championships, which is considered a prelude to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
Flimmons, a drama major from Columbus, MS, is the leading collegiate contender entering the national competition. In May, Flimmons, soared 25’- 10 ¾” to win the outdoor long jump title, at the NCAA Division II National Track and Field Championships. His leap was nearly two feet farther than his nearest competitor. In March, Flimmons won the NCAA Division II national indoor long jump title.
Prince, a junior health and physical education major from Decatur, Ga. ran away from the competition, in a time of 49.21, to win the 400-meter intermediate hurdles event at the NCAA D-2 championships. He also is the reigning SIAC champion in the 400-meter hurdles.
Moffatt is the four-time SIAC high jump champion. The senior physical education major from Newport News, VA finished second at the NCAA D-2 outdoor championships, in May. Moffatt won that event in 2006 and has never finished lower than second place in a collegiate high jump competition.
The Morehouse track and field athletes are coached by Willie H. Hill, who was recently named the South Region Coach of the Year, by the United States Track and Cross Country Coaches Association, for the second straight year.
