May 22, 2007 -- ATLANTA -- Head coach Willie Hill will lead a talented team of student-athletes in pursuit of a national title, when the Maroon Tigers team travels to Charlotte today for the NCAA Division II National Track and Field Championships.
Hosted by Johnson C. Smith University, the NCAA will award individual championships in 20 events and crown an overall team champion. Last year, St. Augustine’s took the team title and Morehouse claimed 10th place in the national event.
High jumper Keith Moffatt and long jumper Randall Flimmons head the list of Maroon Tiger hopefuls.
Moffatt, a senior from Newport News, VA, is the reigning NCAA DII national high jump champion and the four-time SIAC champion.
Flimmons, a senior from Columbus, MS, is the national indoor long jump champion. He qualified for the nationals in both the long jump and the triple jump. In April, Flimmons won the long jump and javelin titles at the SIAC championships.
Damian Prince, a sophomore from Decatur, GA, enters the championships with the second-fastest time in the nation in the 400-meter hurdles. Prince also anchors Morehouse’s top-seeded 4 x 400-meter relay.
In addition to the jumps and hurdles, Morehouse will send a team to compete in the 4x100-meter relays.
The list of other Morehouse student-athletes includes:
Barry Batson, Curtis Dayson, Evan Flax, Brandon Hartley, Marquis Horn, Brandon Morgan, Hasaan Rasheed, Anthony Roberts and Dominic Smith.
On Monday, Hill was named the South Region Coach of the Year for the second straight year, by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Prince was named the Track Athlete of the Year and Flimmons was named Field Athlete of the Year by the coaching association.
The festivities will begin with a banquet on Wednesday and will conclude with the majority of final events on Saturday. Tickets are available for the public at $5 per day or $12 for all three days. For more information, call 704-378-1083.
