MOREHOUSE JUMPS TO SEVENTH AT INDOOR NATIONALS

March 10, 2007 – BOSTON – Morehouse earned a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, held this weekend at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Last year, Morehouse captured eighth place in the national event that includes teams from 40 Division II colleges and universities.

The impressive showing by the Maroon Tigers came mostly on the strength of jumpers Randall Flimmons, who won the long jump championship, and Keith Moffatt and Evan Flax, who finish second and third in the high jump.
Flax also grabbed fifth place in the triple jump.

Other Morehouse scoring came via the 4x400 meter relay team of Curtis Dayson, Brandon Hartley, Damian Prince and Hasaan Rasheed, who dashed to sixth place, in a time of 3:15.22. Dominic Smith captured the eighth spot in the triple jump, with a distance of 47’-7.”

Competitors who finish in the top eight of their event score points for their teams and are named to the All-America Team.

Flimmons, a senior drama major from Columbus, MS, leaped 25’- 4 ¾” to win the long jump title and score 10 points for the Maroon Tigers. His distance was more than six inches further than his nearest competitor. Flimmons, who took fifth place at last year’s national championships, is the reigning SIAC long jump champion.

Just as he did at last year’s indoor championships, Keith Moffatt finished second, behind Jim Dilling of Minnesota State, who leapt 7’-4 1/2” to claim the title. Moffatt, a senior from Newport News, VA, is the current NCAA DII Outdoor champion and three-time SIAC high jump title holder, who has never finished lower than second in his collegiate jumping career. He cleared his best height of 7’-3 ¼” on his first attempt, but could go no higher.

Close behind Moffatt in the high jump competition was Evan Flax who leapt an impressive 7’-2 1/4” to snag third place and score six points. Flax, a junior from Fontana, CA has been making steady progress and looks to be the next in succession in a long line of outstanding Morehouse high jumpers that dates back to the early 90’s. Flax’s distance of 49’-4 ¼” in the triple jump earned him a fifth-place finish.

Morehouse will host the Morehouse Relays Thursday, Friday and Saturday at B.T. Harvey Stadium. This three-day event will showcase runner, jumpers and throwers from Atlanta-area high schools and colleges and universities from across the Southeast.
