December 2, 2006 – CLEMSON, SC – Head Coach Willie H. Hill has the Maroon Tigers off to a flying start in the 2006-07 indoor track and field season. Competing against some of the top Division I and II schools in the Southeast, Morehouse runners, jumper and throwers turned in solid performances in the two-day Clemson University Indoor Open.
The strong showing by the Maroon Tigers sets the stage for what is expected to be another outstanding season for Morehouse track and field. Last year Morehouse took eighth place at the NCAA Division II national indoor championship.
Tops among the Morehouse units were the 4x400-meter relay teams. The “A-Team” of Curtis Dayson, Brandon Hartley, Anthony Roberts and Dominic Smith out-ran the field, to finish first in this high-profile event, with a time of 3:19.19.
As an example of the Morehouse depth in this event, the B-Team, composed of Kevin Chase, Julius Hanks, Danny Harris and Joshua Sams, finished fifteenth in the 21-team event, with a time of 3.29.62.
Morehouse All-American high jumper Keith Moffatt, who holds the meet record for this event, took second place in the high jump competition. Moffatt matched the winning leap of 7’-2 ¾” by Georgia Tech’s Jerome Miller, who earned first place by virtue of fewer misses.
In a crowded 400-meter dash event that featured 70 runners in 13 heats, two Maroon Tigers finished in the top third of the pack. Brandon Hartley finished tied for tenth, in a time of 50.21, and Curtis Dayson finished twenty-first, in a time of 50.85.
Senior Randall Flimmons grabbed second place in the long jump, soaring 24’-3 ¾.”
Displaying both his leaping ability and his versatility, Morehouse newcomer Evan Flax captured third place in the high jump, with a leap of 6’-10 ¾” and took fifth place in the triple jump, with a distance of 48’-10 ¾.” Dominic Smith finished seventh in the triple jump, with a distance of 48’-05 1/2.”
Alex Brickler finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run in 16:21.81.
Former Morehouse standout Javonie Small, running ”Unattached,” took fourth place in the 60-meter hurdles, in a time of 7.98.
The distance medley relay team of Kevin Chase, Julius Hanks, Anthony Roberts and Joshua Sams grabbed fourth place, in a time of 10:43.55.
Had team scores been tabulated, the Maroon Tigers would have been in the running for one of the top spots in the meet.
