MOFFATT WINS NATIONAL TITLE; MOREHOUSE TENTH

May 27, 2006 – EMPORIA, Ks. – Morehouse high jumper Keith Moffatt captured his second national title and helped pace the Maroon Tigers to a tenth-place finish in the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships.

With a leap of 7’-6,” the junior from Newport News, Va. broke the championship meet record and tied the Division II national high jump record. The meet record of 7’-5 ¾” was set by Morehouse alumnus Greg Roberts in 1997. Moffatt’s previous national title came in the 2005 Division II championships in Boston.

By winning the event Moffatt achieved All-America status for the sixth time. The high-flying leaper is the three-time SIAC high jump champion and has never finished lower than second place in any collegiate high jump competition.

In addition to Moffatt, four other Maroon Tigers gained All-America status, by finishing in the top eight in their events.

Cameron Dayne, who graduated magna cum laude in May, achieved his twelfth and thirteenth All America ranking with a sixth- place finish in the triple jump and an eight-place finish in the 200-meter.

Randall Flimmons finished fourth in the long jump with his season best leap of 25’-4.” The versatile junior from Columbus, Ms. also competed in the triple jump and the high jump, but finished out of the top 10.

Damian Prince gained seventh place in the 400-meter hurdles. The freshman from Decatur, Ga. entered the meet as the number one seed, but his finals time of 52.48 was well below his meet qualifying time of 50.91.

Dominic Smith took third place in the triple jump with a distance of 50’-1 ¾.” Seeded fifth entering the meet, the junior from Memphis, Tn. improved two positions. Smith, who played on the Morehouse basketball team last season, finished second in the decathlon at the SIAC championships in April.

The Morehouse 4x400 meter relay team of Brandon Hartley, Ross McMillan, Damian Prince and Mark Washington finished eighth.

At tenth place Morehouse was the top ranked SIAC team. Albany State finished in the twenty-third spot. Benedict and Fort Valley tied for forty-third.

On the women’s side: Fort Valley’s Lynnsey Dailey broke records in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles, on the way to propelling the Wildcat women to a ninth-place finish.

Highlights of the meet will be part of the 2006 NCAA Spring Championships Show which will air on CBS July 1, time TBD.
