May 23, 2006 – ATLANTA – Eleven Maroon Tigers will roar into Emporia, KS, this weekend with dreams of team and individual national titles on their minds.
The 11 Morehouse student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Division II outdoor championships at regional meets throughout the year and will put their talents on the line for national honors, Thursday through Saturday.
High jumper Keith Moffatt and hurdler Damian Prince, who enter the competition as the number one seeds in their respective events, will lead the Morehouse contingent.
Moffatt, a junior from Newport News, Va. is the 2005 NCAA Division II indoor champion and the 2006 runner-up. He is also the 2004, 2005 and 2006 SIAC high jump champion. His leap of 7’-4 ¼” in 2004 is the current SIAC record. This year, Moffatt has already cleared 7’-6.” If he matches that in the nationals he will surpass the DII record of 7’-5 ¾” set by Morehouse alumnus Greg Roberts in 1997.
On Tuesday, Prince was named the NCAA South Region Athlete of the Year, by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The freshman from Decatur, Ga., won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and placed second in the open 400. His time of 50.91 is the best this season among DII competitors. He will also compete in two relay events – the 4x100 and the 4x400.
Randall Flimmons will bolster the Morehouse team with his long jump and high jump skills. The versatile junior, from Columbus, Ms., is the eleventh ranked high jumper, with a season-best leap of 6’-11.” He is the ninth ranked long jumper with a season-best jump of 24’-8 ½.”
Cameron Dayne, one of Morehouse’s most accomplished and versatile track athletes in school history could compete in as many as four events. The junior, from Richmond, Va., is an 11-time All-America selection and the Morehouse record holder in points scored in a national championship meet (2005 Outdoor Championships). Dayne enters the meet as the eleventh seed in the 200-meter dash, the fourth seed in the long jump, with a season-best 24’-11 ¾,” and the sixth seed in the triple jumper, with a qualifying leap of 50’-8.” He is also qualified in the 4x100 and the 4x400-meter relays.
Dominic Smith, a junior from Memphis. Tn., will compete as the fifth-seeded triple jumper. The talented and versatile Smith played on the Morehouse basketball team last season and finished second in the decathlon at the 2006 SIAC championships.
The Maroon Tiger 4x400 relay team of Brandon Hartley, Ross McMillan, Damian Prince and Mark Washington are seeded fourth and the 4x100 relay team of Brandon Morgan, Jamaal Roberts, Hartley and Prince are seeded seventh. McMillan, a junior from Tallahassee, Fl. Will run in the 800 meters and Washington will compete in the 400m hurdles.
