March 11, 2006 -- BOSTON -- The Flying Maroon Tigers displayed their abundant talents in front of the nation at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, March 10-11.
Morehouse finished eighth in a field of 43 teams, compiling 25 points in 15 events at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
The Maroon Tigers were led by high jumper Keith Moffatt who set an NCAA Division II Championship record with a jump of 2.29 meters (7’- 06”). Minnesota State-Mankato’s Jim Dilling tied Moffatt’s leap and ultimately captured the high jump crown, after gaining the 2.29-meter mark with fewer misses.
Prior to the nationals, Moffatt, a junior Physical Education major from Newport News, VA, was named the NCAA Division II South Region Men’s Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Morehouse senior Cameron Dayne added more points to the board for the Maroon Tigers with a second-place finish in the long jump (7.55m, 24-09.25’) and a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 15.59 meters (51’ 01.75”).
Junior Randall Flimmons scored the final four points for Morehouse with a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 7.40 meters (24’ 03.50”). The Morehouse 4x400-meter- relay team entered the competition as the number eight seed, but were disqualified when a runner dropped the baton.
St. Augustine’s of the CIAA claimed their ninth overall NCAA Division II championship and SIAC provisional member Lincoln University (MO) women’s team won their second national championship in three years.
