April 16, 2005 – ALBANY, GA – The Flying Maroon Tigers sprinted, leaped, vaulted, and hurled themselves to a second place finish in the 2005 SIAC Track and Field Championships, held in Albany this weekend.

In one of the most hotly contested SIAC track and field championships in recent memory, Morehouse finished two points behind two-time defending champion Albany State University. It was the third consecutive year that the Golden Rams edged out the Maroon Tigers who had dominated in the championships for nearly a decade.

Morehouse Head Coach Willie Hill was voted the tournament Coach of the Year, but deferred the award to Albany State head coach Willie Laster, who is retiring after nearly 30 years of coaching at the Southwest Georgia college. At the awards ceremony following the meet, Hill’s eyes watered and his voice cracked as he praised Laster against whom he has competed for almost a quarter of a century.

Morehouse got outstanding contributions from many student-athletes who finished at or near the top in almost every event.

The Maroon Tigers’ most dominating performer was Cameron Dayne, who finished first in the long jump, first in the triple jump, first in the 200-meter dash, second in the 100-meter dash and anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay race.
