March 21, 2004 ATLANTA For the first time in its 33-year history, the Morehouse College Relays were held under the lights at the B.T. Harvey Stadium. And in the glow of the newly installed lights, the Maroon Tigers track and field team used the opportunity to display their might.
In front of a packed stadium, one Maroon Tigers earned an automatic bid and four others gained provisional bids to the 2004 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, to be held May 27-29, in Mount Sac, CA.
Freshman Keith Moffatt won the high jump competition with a jump of 7- 2. Teammates Randell Flimmons and Jared Stearne, finished 3rd and 6th respectively. The leap assures Moffatt of an automatic berth to the outdoor national championships. Moffatt had already gained national recognition and All-America status in March, winning the indoor national high jump championship.
On the field, sophomore Cameron Daynes leap of 48- 3 took second place in the triple jump behind Albany States Brandon Roulhac who leapt 48-5. Dayne gained All-America status last year for his performance in the NCAA Division II national championships. He also finished third this year in the indoor nationals.
On the track, the Morehouse 4 x 100-meter relay team of Terrance Battle, Randall Scoot, Cameron Dayne, and Javonie Small finished in third place with a time of 41.00.
In the 400-meter dash, Battle ran a season best time of 47.81 to cross the finish line in third place. His teammate, James Hill, also produced a personal and season best time of 48.68 to finish in seventh place.
In the 110-meter hurdles, All American Javonie Small further solidified his growing reputation and his place on the list of NCAA qualifiers with a time of 14.57 and a second place finish.
In the nights final event, the 4 x 400- meter relay team of Battle, Hill, Ross McMillan and Javonie Small electrified the crowd by running a time of 3:12.55 on their way to winning the event and provisionally qualifying for the national championships.
