May 17, 2006 – TUCKER, GA – Morehouse won a share of the 2005-06 SIAC Commissioner’s All-Sports Award, conference officials announced today.

Morehouse shares the award with Albany State University. Each team tallied 31 points in the competition that covers all sports sponsored by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The SIAC uses a scoring system of 10 points for 1st place, 7 points for 2nd place and 4 points for 3rd place to determine the all-sports standings for the SIAC’s 12 member institutions. Football is determined by the finish in the regular season. There is no third place for basketball, because the tournament is single elimination and does not offer a consolation game.

Morehouse claimed a share of the prestigious award by winning conference championships in cross country and track & field, finishing second in tennis and third in baseball. The top-place finish is the first for Morehouse since 2001, when the College won the all-sports award in a landslide.

The 1st place finish for Albany State marks the third consecutive victory for ASU in the SIAC Commissioner’s All-Sports Award. Stillman and Tuskegee finished tied for third place with 17 points and Fort Valley State finished fifth with 15 points. In its first year in the SIAC, Stillman won 2006 SIAC basketball tournament. Tuskegee won the tennis championship.

On the women’s side, Albany State took home its third consecutive title with 30 points, winning conference championships in cross country, track & field and volleyball. Benedict College finished second in the conference competition, compiling 19 points. Benedict finished second in softball and third in cross country, tennis and track & field. Fort Valley wrapped up third place with 18 points, by finishing in second place in basketball and track & field and third place in softball. Paine College (17 points), Clark Atlanta (14 points), Kentucky State (14 points) and Tuskegee (10 points) rounded out the scoring.
