November 1, 2009 – ATLANTA – Philip Allen shot a 2-under par 70, to lift the Maroon Tigers to a first-place finish in the rain-shortened Black College Hall of Fame Golf Tournament.
Allen, a senior from Atlanta, won the award for shooting the lowest score.
Morehouse’s victory represented a dramatic turnaround from last year’s eighth place finish in the tournament, which was again played at the par-72 Brown’s Mill Golf Club, on Cleveland Avenue. The tournament showcased 15 Division I-AA and Division II teams from throughout the Southeast.
In the Division II section, the Maroon Tigers shot a 309, to finish 17 strokes ahead of second-place Fayetteville State.
Bryan McElderry shot 77, Olajuwon Ajanaku shot 80 and Earl Cooper and Malcolm Parrish tied at 82, to drive the Morehouse victory. Thaddaeus Hill shot 85, but didn’t factor into the scoring.
Jackson State shot a 303, to win the Division 1-AA section, by one-stroke over Tennessee State.
The two-day tournament, which normally takes place in conjunction with the Atlanta Football Classic, was rescheduled from September because of inclement weather. This weekend’s tournament was reduced to one day, because of heavy rains Saturday.
Morehouse, coached by PGA coaching pro William Lewis, will play in the Savannah State University tournament, Sunday through Tuesday.
Division II Results:
Morehouse College 309
Fayetteville State 326
Paine College 346
Talladega College 350
Benedict College 387
