April 22, 2009 – ALBANY, GA – Morehouse golfers streaked to an early lead and widened it steadily, on the way to a convincing victory in the SIAC Golf Championship.
Morehouse won by 28 strokes over Benedict and by 58 strokes over Paine, last season’s conference champion. LeMoyne-Owen and Kentucky State completed the order of finish.
Prior to the tournament, Morehouse golfers dominated the All-SIAC awards. Olajuwon Ajanaku, Philip Allen and Bryan McElderry were voted to the All-Conference team. Thaddaeus Hill, who boasts a 3.59 gpa, was named to the All-Academic Team. McElderry was voted Freshman of the Year.
McElderry set the pace in round one. The freshman from Birmingham, AL, shot a 75, to lead all golfers, at the Flint River Golf Club. The low score helped Morehouse post a 10-stroke lead.
The lead swelled to 33 stokes in round two, as Ajanaku, with 73, Allen, with 74, and McElderry, with 77, dominated the field, recording the day’s three lowest scores.
On Day Three, Philip Allen’s 71 topped all scorers, as Morehouse golfers shot a combined 350, to complete the victory.
Allen, a junior from Atlanta, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, an honor given to the golfer with the lowest three-day score.
Coach Bill Lewis was named Coach of the Year. Ajanaku, who hails from New York City and transferred to Morehouse from Benedict this year, joined Allen on the All-Tournament Team.
