April 23, 2008 – ALBANY, GA – Morehouse staged a last-day rally, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a commanding lead by Paine College, which won the first SIAC golf tournament held since 1980.
The tournament was “unofficial” because not enough SIAC member schools field golf teams – it takes six. But the unofficial tag wasn’t evident in the play of the five teams who went stroke for stroke at Albany’s Flint River Golf Course for three days.
Morehouse entered the last day trailing Paine by 13 strokes. However the Maroon Tigers could only close the gap to eight stokes by day’s end and finished second. Kentucky State took third, Benedict finished fourth and Lemoyne Owen was fifth.
Morehouse’s Philip Allen, who led the field in scoring, was named the tournament MVP. He shot a 73, 74 and 80, to win the scoring title by one stroke. Allen also earned All-SIAC and All-Tournament honors.
Teammate Esquire Ward earned a spot on the All-Tournament team and was voted to the second team All-Conference.
Thaddeaous Hill, a freshman Business and Marketing major with a 3.68 grade-point-average, made the All-Academic Team honor roll.
Morehouse’s next match will be the PGA National Minority Collegiate Golf Championships, in Port St. Lucie, FL, May 8-10.
