March 20, 2007 – DOUGLASVILLE, GA – The Maroon Tigers golf team battled back from a three-stroke deficit on day one, to win the Morehouse invitational golf tournament, held at the West Pines Country Club, in Douglasville.
After the first round of the two-day tournament, Morehouse trailed the Florida A&M Rattlers by a score of 304-307.
But the Maroon Tigers got tough on their home turf and pulled off an 11-stroke turnaround, winning the match by eight strokes over a five-team field.
Every Morehouse golfer improved his score on the second day. The Maroon Tigers were led by freshman Phillip Allen who shot a low score of 72 on day one and a blistering low score of 69 on day two, for a tournament-best 141.
Junior Ed Hills was close behind, with a 78-72 – 150.
The most dramatic improvement was turned in by Morehouse freshman Bilal NuMan who improved his score from 82 on day one to 75 on day two.
The match was the second hosted by Morehouse. The Maroon Tigers won last year’s event, beating out Savannah State and Fayetteville State. Morehouse plays as an independent team, because not enough schools in the SIAC sponsor golf as an intercollegiate sport.
Morehouse will play in the 21st PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship, May 10-13, in Port St. Lucie, FL. Last year the Maroon Tigers finished fourth in the prestigious event.
(The best four scores from each day are used to determine the outcome.)
